WELCOME
TO CAR FREE LA!When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous,\nwhen hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking. ~ Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Launched
on Earth Day 2006, Car Free LA is a web site dedicated to
bringing about the beautiful vision
of a car-free county. Los Angeles is the most populous
county in the country, with a population estimated by the
US Census, as of 2004, at 9,937,739, its population is greater
than that of 43 states in the union. Anything accomplished
in Los Angeles will be heard around the world.
The
age of the car is over. It is time for revolution. Whether
by bicycle,
by foot, or by public transportation, we can all take part
in the movement to save the world.

There
are many resources to your left to help you give up cars
and enjoy a healthier alternative for you and your surroundings.
For a little fun, you can also read the random bicycle
or car-free quotes that appear each time you visit the homepage.

Film Festival 2007 HITS LA - DON'T MISS IT!
~ Added by Gary Isse June 29, 2007
Wow, I can't believe it's been another year! I went last year and had a blast not only at watching some of the most creative films I've seen put together about bicycles, but also being submerged in the bike culture for a while. Have your bike valet parked, meet some new biking partners, join the block part on July 1st, watch some great films, more. After LA, the festival goes international hitting Austria, England, Australia, Japan, Spain, and Italy. Definitely something not to be missed! {Learn

Phoenix Zero-Emissions Electric Vehicle Debut at 2007 Pasadena Earth Day
~ Added by Gary Isse April 21, 2007
One year after the launch of CarFreeLA.com, I decided to head to the 2007 Pasadena Earth Day Festival to take a look at what's going on in the green world. As many of you may know, CarFreeLA.com was started with a vow of mine to not purchase another vehicle until a 100% zero-emissions vehicle was available. Well folks, it looks like I won't be waiting much longer. Phoenix Motors, out of Ontario California, today debuted their Zero Emissions Sports Utility Truck. I took this quick video and was lucky enough to have one of their salespeople tell us a little something about the truck, which will be available for purchase in California this summer. I hope you like it. {See Video}

The
Ditty Bops Take Off
~ Added by Gary Isse May 25, 2006
I
showed up to Amoeba Records on Tuesday May 23rd, and caught The
Ditty Bops as they were on stage doing their sound checks.
An upright bass, keyboard, violin and accordion were amongst
the instruments being checked, aside from those in Amanda
and Abby's hands. It didn't take them too long to get the
sound they wanted and relax for a bit before putting on their "teaser" show
for the growing crowd of music lovers before they take off
on their cross country bicycle tour. {More...

A
Letter To Congress Against
the Car and Big Oil
~ Added by Gary Isse May 14, 2006
Today
I dropped in the mailbox the following letter addressed to
my Senators, my Representative in the House,
President George W. Bush and Bill Ford, President of the Ford
Motor Company. The letter is basically a declaration of my
political stance against the automobile and Big Oil. Please
join me in expressing your concern. Feel free to use my letter
or a variation of it in your expression. It is time that we
let them know that change must be made, now. {Read

South
Central Farmers. Deadline Looming
~ Added by Gary Isse May 11, 2006
When
most people think of South Central Los Angeles, they think
of
gangs, drugs, drive-by shootings, and riots. I know
those thoughts traveled through my mind as I got off the
bus at 41st and Compton Ave., on my way to visit the South
Central Farmers. Although I was not the most relaxed or
comfortable walking the two blocks to the farm, I felt 100%
safe once within its confines; a place that Tom
Morello guitarist of rock band Audioslave and
founder of Axis
of Justice called an “embodiment of the American Dream;?What
Mike Farrell, actor turned activist called an “oasis of life.?By
now you may be asking what Tom
Morello, Mike
Farrell, a farm,
and I were doing in the middle of South Central Los Angeles. {Read

C.I.C.L.E.org
~ Added by Gary Isse May 8, 2006
For
those of you ready to save the world and take the plunge
into bicycle commuting, I have an excellent resource for
you. C.I.C.L.E., or Cyclists Inciting Change Thru Live Exchange,
is a Los Angeles based group of grassroots activists promoting
the bicycle as a viable and sustainable form of transportation.
They are currently working to unify and represent the incredible
enthusiasm, diversity, and creativity of the bicycle movement
by becoming a central online hub of useful information. They
have a ton of excellent resources available on their web
site, including beginning and aspiring commuter resources,
links to great books, inspiration, maps, gear, and much more.
They have so many useful links and articles that it would
be impossible for me to list them all here, so make it easier
for us all and just check out their web site. {Check

Ditty
Bops Cross-Country Bicycle Tour
~ Added by Gary Isse May 4, 2006
With
us all concerned about global warming, carbon emissions and
big oil's rampage on the earth, it is no surprise that bands
are looking for a better, more earth-friendly way of touring
across the country to promote their music. And a better way
has been found. Los Angeles-based pop duo The
Ditty Bops will be departing on May 25th, 2006 from Los
Angeles on a cross-country tour solely by bicycle. Move over
Neil Young, these girls are my new heroes. {Read
